The snow bound valley which became an olympic ski resort

Serre Chevalier Ski Photo

The name of the valley of Serre Chevalier can be loosely translated to mean a ‘flock’ of ‘hills’. The massive mountains that lock in this valley leave no doubt that they were the reason for this unique name. Serre Chavalier’s Roman connections can be traced back to the olden days when this valley was, along with Briançon, under the rule of this great civilization. The Dauphine took control of this valley and brought it under the overall principality of Briançon in 1024. It was in the late 1340’s that Serre Chavalier became a part of the French kingdom. The famous French military architect Vauban lived in this picturesque valley for a while.

The valley itself falls between the Col du Lautaret and Briancon. It is most well known for the spectacular skiing opportunities it offers to both beginners and experts. The many villages that dot this south facing valley flourish on the tourist trade generated by scores of vacationers wishing to try their luck on the slopes. The picture perfect village homes that are located in Serre Chavalier and the stone clock towers that can be seen in many places here serve to break the monotony of the never ending snow covered slopes.

Skiing in Serre Chevalier The present day Serre Chavalier ski resort includes the Briançon ski area, covering some of the most spectacular snow covered miles on Earth. With slopes offering skiing opportunities at altitudes of between 1200 and 2800 meters, it is not surprising that Serre Chavalier is not just one of the biggest skiing resorts in Europe but also one of the most popular.

The most appealing aspect about this valley is that its weather is as friendly and welcoming as the locals who inhabit this area. The towering mountains protect the valley from the cold winds and snow to a significant extent. The valley has the best skiing climate at most times, and even the rare bouts of bad weather seem to clear up quickly leaving tourists free to indulge in their favorite pastime once again.

The valley is fully geared up to meet the varied requirements of visitors of all sorts. Whether it is great accommodation or delicious local cuisine, you can find everything here to suit your needs. The clean and pure air does wonders for those who arrive from crowded and polluted metropolitan cities. The hot springs in Le Monêtier les Bains especially draw huge crowds for their healing properties. The thermal baths are a great way to unwind and truly relax your mind, body and soul.
